In 2018, around 65% of its electricity supply came from large hydroelectric projects and over 15% came from wind, solar and biomass.Meanwhile, auctions for wind and solar projects generated bids to produce renewable energy at some of the lowest prices in the world and attracted $6 billion in investment in 2017.Large-scale hydropower development has reached a point of diminishing returns.Despite being considered a renewable energy source because it is generated by water, it causes great impacts because it requires monumental constructions that alter entire ecosystems and can generate irreversible environmental damage, in addition to catastrophic accidents that have already occurred in the country numerous times. There is still progress to be made on other renewables. For now, wind power accounts for almost 8% of electricity supply.Solar energy accounts for just 0.5%, but it is growing at an impressive rate.
